SANTA CRUZ — With many universities turning away record variety of candidates, the importance of the school application essay is increasing. Expensive coaching services together with current university admissions scandal show the lengths to which some families is certainly going for an admissions side.
A diverse team of authors, journalists and other professionals is volunteering this month, aiming to help Santa Cruz County students from all backgrounds strengthen their application essays for the fifth year.
The free essay-writing workshop is scheduled Oct. 12 in Santa Cruz and Oct. 22 in Watsonville. Created in 2015 by Associated Press reporter Martha Mendoza, retired twelfth grade English instructor Connie Bertuca while the younger Writers Program, it’s loosely modeled after having a similar workshop placed on yearly by bay area nonprofit 826 Valencia.
Mendoza, a Pulitzer journalist that is prize-winning UCSC professor, stated she’s heard of Santa Cruz workshop make a visible impact for hundreds of pupils.
